This is an annual one-day mini-conference which aims to share ideas on a wide range of topics on language teaching and learning, hosted by the Research Institute for Communication and the Department of English Education of Kansai University of International Studies (KUIS). This year's co-sponsors include Osaka JALT, Kobe JALT, Nara JALT, JALT CUE SIG, JALT Jr/Sr High School SIG, Oxford Publishing, and Cengage Learning.

Invited speakers are 1) Matthew Apple of Ritsumeikan University who will talk about the recently published book on language learning motivation in Japan, 2) Toru Nakahara, Superintendent of Osaka City Board of Education, and 3) Matthew Cook, Sr. Manager at Osaka City Board of Education. Nakahara and Cook will explain reforms in Osaka's English language education.

KUIS Amagasaki campus is on the north side of JR (Japan Railroad) Amagasaki station, about a 5-minute walk from the station.

Using Keynote in your lessons can help to make them more engaging and interesting for your students, and more fun, productive, and efficient for you. For people who aren't yet familiar with the new versions of Keynote on the Mac and iPad, or have never really used presentation software before, this hands-on workshop will cover the basics; getting started with built-in templates, simple builds and animations using text and images, cool transitions, and a few very special effects that you just can't get from chalk on a blackboard! This is a great opportunity to learn some easy, effective ideas that you can use in class right away.

Steve Paton and Malcolm Swanson are both English language teachers at universities in Fukuoka Prefecture. The workshop will be conducted in English, with limited assistance in Japanese available.

Seating is limited, so reserving a place is highly recommended. Please bring along your Mac or iPad with the latest version of Keynote installed so as to be able to participate more actively in the workshop. A limited number of MacBooks and iPads will be available, courtesy of the Apple Store, for those who can't bring one themselves. We are very fortunate to be able to host Dr. Liliana Landolfi of the University of Naples, Italy, during her visit to Japan. She will be speaking about the role of emotions in second-language learning, the power of fears in blocking acquisition and the need to solve blocking issues for successful results. These topics relate to her current research.

The computational analysis, run on the bilingual data that the EFL P.Æ.C.E. Corpus (Landolfi 2012) contains, identifies the word FEAR, in its Italian and English possible variations, as the second most frequent word used in the whole corpus by EFL learners to describe their language learning reality. Drawing upon these data, the present study addresses students’ discomfort, analyses the various types of fears that first-year university students manifest, and proposes the use of visualizations as working tools to overcome blocks and empower learners. From the analysis, it has emerged that fears may be overcome drawing upon an internal motivational force, named Emotivation, that is rooted in the personal emotional sphere.

Before this recent area of investigation, Professor Landolfi was intrigued by the major role that L2 teachers have at elementary level. She has worked on a number of aspects related to teacher-training and material development with a special focus on what Italians call "pedagogia ludica" which means learning while playing (songs, short dramas, puppetry and masks, etc.). She has also dedicated years to the facilitation of the writing process with L2 young learners.

Liliana Landolfi, Ph.D. (in Applied Linguistics at U.S.C Los Angeles, CA.), is an Associate Professor of English language and linguistics at the University of Naples, L’Orientale, Italy. Her research interests include English in its acquisitional nuances and manifestations. She is the author of several CALL programs, books, and articles. She is currently analysing the impact of Emotivation in formal contexts of L2 acquisition. PÆCE An Italian-English Corpus based on EFL Learners (Liguori, 2012) and Behind and Beyond the EFL PÆCE Corpus (Liguori, 2012) are among her recent publications.
